CPRA Coordinating Efforts with Coast Guard and National Guard to Expedite Oil Blocking and Clean Up Efforts in Terrebonne Parish

BATON ROUGE (May 28, 2010) - Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority officials are coordinating efforts with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Louisiana National Guard to speed efforts to contain and clean up oil approaching Terrebonne Parish islands and bays by staging materials on jack-up barges and closing gaps and washouts on beaches.

Jerome Zeringue, Deputy Director of the Office of Coastal Protection and Restoration, which is the CPRA's implementation office, is reporting that three "spud" or jack-up barges have been positioned in passes between Terrebonne barrier islands to stage both hard and sorbent boom for deployment. This will improve the efficiency of boom deployment.

OCPR officials worked with Louisiana Representative Gordon Dove, chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, and Terrebonne Parish President Michel Claudet on these plans.

Also, a barge with living quarters for workers has been moved to the barrier islands allowing clean up crews to sleep and take meals on site. The establishment of the supply barges and living quarters will maximize the crews' efforts by eliminating the need for multiple crew boat trips back and forth from inland docks to deliver supplies and workers to clean up sites.

Five boats rigged for oil skimming are currently utilizing the barges and living quarters. They are working near the barrier islands including Timbalier, Trinity, Whiskey and Raccoon Islands.

CPRA officials and the National Guard have also been coordinating efforts to fill in washouts and gaps on beaches in Terrebonne using sand bags dropped by helicopter. CPRA officials are also working to secure a contract to close a 15-foot deep gap in the beach at Timbalier Island with sheet plings.
