Report on Oil Sightings throughout Coastal Louisiana

BATON ROUGE (July 15, 2010) - The below is a situational awareness report of oil impacted areas led by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the Louisiana Army National Guard and local governments.

Note: The information in this report has been forwarded to the federal incident command post in Houma, which is composed of U.S. Coast Guard and BP officials. This report consists of newly impacted areas, and does not serve as a comprehensive listing of impacted areas.

Sightings Report July 15, 2010

St. Bernard Parish:

  • Sighting: Oil impacting the shore of an unnamed island .75 miles ENE of Deadman's Bayou.
  • Sighting: Oil impacting the E shore of Turtle Pen Isle.
  • Sighting: Oil impacting the NE shore of an unnamed island at the SW side of Fox Bay.
  • Sighting: Oil impacting the shore of unnamed island located at the N end of Conkey Cove.
  • Sighting: Oil impacting the marsh grass located in Indian Mound Bay on the W side of Oak Mound Bayou.
  • Sighting: Oil impacting the NE shore on unnamed island on the E side of Door Point Lagoon.
  • Sighting: Oil impacting the shore on an unnamed island in the Chandelier Sound 1.5 miles WSW of Point Paulina.
  • Sighting: Oil impacting the marsh grass on the E side of an unnamed island 3.25 miles SW of Brush Island.
  • Sighting: Numerous patches of oil located offshore 15.75 miles SW of Pelican Island.
  • Sighting: Oil with tar balls impacting the marsh 1.7 miles NNE of the Southwest Pass Lighthouse.

Plaquemines Parish:

  • Sighting: Oil with tar balls located offshore 23 miles W of the East Jetty.
  • Sighting: Oil sheen around the group of islands located just SW of the West Bay Seaplane Base.
  • Sighting: Tar balls located in Chawee Bay .8 miles N of the West Bay Seaplane Base.
  • Sighting: Tar balls located in Zinzin Bay 1 mile N of Williams Pass.
  • Sighting: Black oil reported as covering a 10 mile by 10 mile area located 1/4 mile E of Dennis Pass.
  • Sighting: Numerous reports of oil with sheen and emulsified oil located offshore 60 SE of the South Pass.

Jefferson Parish:

  • Sighting: Oil sheen located 10 S of Elmer's Island.

Lafourche Parish:

  • Sighting: Patches of oil 20 feet by 20 feet in size located .4 miles SE of Bay Marchand
  • Sighting: Patch of oil 50 feet wide by 100 feet long located miles SSE of Fort Blanc.
  • Sighting: Oil sheen mile long by 600 feet wide located .35 miles WNW of Deep Bayou.

Terrebonne Parish:

  • Sighting: Two patches of oil with long streamer located offshore 14.25 miles SSW of Little Mosquito Bayou.
  • Sighting: Large streamer of oil located offshore 7 miles SSW of the mouth to Oyster Bayou.
  • Sighting: Oil located offshore 5.5 miles SSW of Pelican Island.
  • Sighting: 1000 feet long by 10 feet wide area of oil sheen located .4 miles W of an unnamed island on the E side of Bay Negresse.

Iberia Parish:

  • Sighting: Oil impacting the shore of Marsh Island 2.75 miles SE of Lighthouse Point.
  • Sighting: Oil impacting the shore of Marsh Island .85 miles NW of Grosse Isle Point.
  • Sighting: Oil impacting the shore of Marsh Island 1.7 miles SSE of Oyster Lake.

Vermilion Parish:

  • Sighting: 30 feet by 30 feet area of oil with sheen located offshore 10.25 miles SSE of the mouth of the Freshwater Bayou Canal.
