Report on Oil Sightings throughout Coastal Louisiana

BATON ROUGE (July 17, 2010) - The below is a situational awareness report of oil impacted areas led by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the Louisiana Army National Guard and local governments.

Note: The information in this report has been forwarded to the federal incident command post in Houma, which is composed of U.S. Coast Guard and BP officials. This report consists of newly impacted areas, and does not serve as a comprehensive listing of impacted areas.


Sightings Report July 17, 2010


St. Bernard Parish:
  • Sighting: Oil located in Deep Water Pass 4 miles ESE of Shell Island.
  • Sighting: Tar balls located in N Drum Bay 2 miles WSW of Turtle Pen Isle.
  • Sighting: Tar balls impacting shoreline of an unnamed island located in N Drum Bay 1.75 miles SW of Turtle Pen Isle.
  • Sighting: Tar balls, tar mats and oil covered sand located in various areas throughout the shoreline of the Chandeleur Islands from 7 miles NNE of North Island to 3 miles SSE of North Island.



Plaquemines Parish:
  • Sighting: Multiple sighting of dark red emulsion with silver sheen located offshore 50 miles SE of South Pass.
  • Sighting: Multiple sighting of orange emulsion with silver sheen located offshore 63 miles SSE of South Pass.
  • Sighting: Dark emulsion with silver sheen located offshore 64 miles SE of South Pass.
  • Sighting: Oil sheen located offshore 14 miles SE of the S tip of the South Pass.
  • Sighting: Black slugs located offshore 8 miles NW of Southwest Pass entrance.
  • Sighting: Sheen located in Rattlesnake Bayou 5.6 mile ESE of Big Island.
  • Sighting: Heavy oil located offshore 66 miles SE of South Pass.
  • Sighting: Emulsified oil with tar balls 400 yards wide by 1/2 mile long located offshore .75 miles SSE of the SE end of Isle Grande Terre.
  • Sighting: Oil impacting the NW marsh on an unnamed marsh island located 1.35 miles N of Saint Mary's Point.
  • Sighting: Oil impacting the marsh on an unnamed marsh island located .75 miles N of Saint Mary's Point.
  • Sighting: Oil impacting the marsh on an unnamed marsh island located 2 miles ENE of Saint Mary's Point.
  • Sighting: 150 yards wide by 1 mile long, brown oil streamer with sheen located 1 mile S of the S entrance to Bay Jimmy.
  • Sighting: 100 yards by 100 yards reddish, brown oil located in Bay Jimmy at the N entrance.
  • Sighting: Oil impacting the marsh on the N cut into Bay Jimmy.
  • Sighting: Oil impacting the marsh on the NW side of Bay Batiste.



Jefferson Parish:
  • Sighting: 40 yards wide patch of reddish, foamy oil located .21 miles NNE of Foster Road
  • Sighting: miles long by 20 feet wide streamer of brown oil located .34 miles WNW of W Central Avenue.
  • Sighting: 1/2 mile long x 100 yard wide, brown, oil slick in Fort Blanc Bay 1.34 miles W of Panama Point.
  • Sighting: 1 foot wide by 20 feet long brown oil slick in the Barataria Pass.
  • Sighting: Orange emulsified oil 1/2 mile long by 1foot wide located .32 miles SE of Isle Grand Terre.
  • Sighting: Oil sheen located off the S shore of Grand Isle .3 miles SSE of Cedar Lane.



Lafourche Parish:
  • Sighting: 10 feet by 20 feet patch of oil sheen located .7 miles S of the Leeville Bridge.



Terrebonne Parish:
  • Sighting: 30 feet by 12 feet pool of oil located on the SW side of Lake Chapeau.
  • Sighting: Tar balls located on the S shore of Trinity Island starting in the middle and running E.



Cameron Parish:
  • Sighting: 4 inch tar ball located on Constance Beach .13 miles E of Gene Lane.
  • Sighting: Two 4 inch tar balls located on offshore .30 miles SE of West Avenue.
  • Sighting: 4 inch tar ball and oily debris located on Hackberry Beach.
  • Sighting: 6 inch tar ball located on beach .4 miles E of Parish Road 532.
  • Sighting: 4 inch tar ball located on beach 6.75 miles W of Highway 27.
  • Sighting: Oil/tar like substance located on East Rutherford Beach.



Iberia Parish:
  • Sighting: Oil impacting the marsh grass and beach for a length of 300 yards on Marsh Island 4 miles ESE of Lighthouse Point.
