Report on Oil Sightings throughout Coastal Louisiana

BATON ROUGE (July 19, 2010) - The below is a situational awareness report of oil impacted areas led by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the Louisiana Army National Guard and local governments.

Note: The information in this report has been forwarded to the federal incident command post in Houma, which is composed of U.S. Coast Guard and BP officials. This report consists of newly impacted areas, and does not serve as a comprehensive listing of impacted areas.


Sightings Report July 19, 2010


St. Bernard Parish:
Date: July 19, 2010
  • Sighting: Oil impacting the marsh located in Drum Bay 1.75 miles SW of Turtle Pen Isle.

Date: July 18, 2010
  • Sighting: Brown cloudy substance located 3.5 miles W of the N Chandeleur Island.
  • Sighting: Brown cloudy substance with foamy substance located 4.5 miles NW of North Island



Plaquemines Parish:
Date: July 19, 2010
  • Sighting: Oil emulsion located offshore 1.30 miles S of Sandy Point.
  • Sighting: Unrecoverable oil impacting Shell Rock beach located in Grand Bayou Pass.
  • Sighting: Oil impacting marsh grass located in Petit Bay Chene Fleur.
  • Sighting: Oil sheen located in Bay Batiste 2.32 miles NE of Big Island.
  • Sighting: Oil sheen with tar balls located in N Barataria Bay on the W side of Saint Marys Point.
  • Sighting: Oil sheen located in S side of Bay Ronquille 2 miles NW of Point Cheniere Ronquille.
  • Sighting: Oil sheen located 1 mile N of the E side of Isle Grand Terre.
  • Sighting: Oil located offshore 23 miles SE of South Pass.

Date: July 18, 2010
  • Sighting: Oil sheen located in S Barataria Bay 1 mile NW of Grand Terre Islands



Jefferson Parish:
Date: July 19, 2010
  • Sighting: Oil sheen located offshore 12.59 miles SE of Elmers Island.
  • Sighting: Oil on a private property located at Cherry St and LA-3235 on the S central side of Grand Isle.

Date: July 18, 2010
  • Sighting: Light Oil Sheen located in Caminada Bay.
  • Sighting: Tar ball located at the end of a pier 1 mile N of the Grand Isle Bridge.



Terrebonne Parish:
Date: July 19, 2010
  • Sighting: Oil located offshore 9 miles S of Timbalier Island.
  • Sighting: Oil streamers located on Bayou Petit Caillou 1 mile E of Sainte Elaine Pass.
  • Sighting: Oil located in Lake Pelto 2 miles NW of Bodwin Point.
  • Sighting: Oil streamers located in N Bay Round 4.39 miles W of Bodwin Point.
  • Sighting: Oil emulsion located offshore 1.5 miles SW of Locust Bayou.
  • Sighting: Oil sheen located in Bay Lost Reef 2.25 miles W of Cooke Point.



St. Mary:
Date: July 19, 2010
  • Sighting: Oil located 4 miles SW of East Bay.
  • Sighting: Oil located 3.38 miles WSW of Salt Point.



St. Tammany Parish:
Date: July 19, 2010
  • Sighting: Oil sheen located in a canal 2 miles N of Treasure Island near HWY 433.



Cameron Parish:
Date: July 19, 2010
  • Sighting: Tar balls impacting the shoreline located 2 miles SW of Lower Mud Lake.
  • Sighting: Tar balls impacting shoreline located 4.5 miles W of Lower Mud Lake.
  • Sighting: Tar balls impacting shoreline located 5 miles E of Calcasieu Pass.

Date: July 18, 2010
  • Sighting: A dozen small tar balls, with washed up debris also being semi-coated with oil located on Rutherford Beach.



Iberia Parish:
Date: July 19, 2010
  • Sighting: Oil located offshore 1.33 miles S of the SW side of Marsh Island.
  • Sighting: Oil located offshore 1.87 miles S of the SW shoreline of Marsh Island.
  • Sighting: Oil streamers 5'X30' located 100 YRDS S of the Marsh Island Shore 5 miles SSE of Southwest Pass.
