Report on Oil Sightings throughout Coastal Louisiana

BATON ROUGE (July 29, 2010) - The below is a situational awareness report of oil impacted areas led by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the Louisiana Army National Guard and local governments.

Note: The information in this report is unconfirmed by the state and has been forwarded to the federal incident command post in Houma, which is composed of U.S. Coast Guard and BP officials, for their action. This report consists of newly impacted areas, and does not serve as a comprehensive listing of impacted areas.

Sightings Report July 29, 2010

Jefferson:

  • Sighting: Two small ribbons of oil and dime sized orange globules located 1.8 miles W of Grand Terre Islands
  • Sighting: Light oil sheen with tar balls 6 feet in diameter located .3 miles E of Beauregard Island.
  • Sighting: 100 feet of old and new oil located 1.8 miles N of Manilla.
  • Sighting: Oil patch 3 miles long by 100 yards wide located 6 miles SE of Elmer's Island.

Lafourche:

  • Sighting: Oil streamers located 6 miles SW of East Timbalier Island.
  • Sighting: Oil located 4 miles S of East Timbalier Island.
  • Sighting: Light oil sheen streamers located 1.45 miles W of the East Timbalier Island.
  • Sighting: 10 yards by 300 yards area of dark red oil streamers and sheen located 2.25 W of Calumet Island.
  • Sighting: 3 or 4 slicks of red emulsified oil 300 to 400 feet in area located in Timbalier Bay 2.75 miles ESE of Casse-tete Island.
  • Sighting: Streamers of red emulsified oil 1 mile long by 10 yards wide located in Timbalier Bay .68 miles NE of Timbalier Bay Camp Seaplane Base.
  • Sighting: Oil streamers located 2.7 miles S of Bell Pass.
  • Sighting: Oil and dime sized to basketball sized tar balls impacting the E shore at the mouth to Bell Pass.
  • Sighting: 15 feet wide by 100 feet long area of oil sheen and tar balls located .8 miles inside Bell Pass.
  • Sighting: Light oil almost on the beach at Bay Marchand.
  • Sighting: Tar balls impacting the beach on the E side of Bay Champagne.
  • Sighting: Oil located 3 miles S of East Timbalier Island.
  • Sighting: 200 feet by 5000 feet of heavy patches of oil located 3 miles SE of Timbalier Island.
  • Sighting: 2500 feet by 5000 feet patch of oil sheen located 3.5 miles S of East Timbalier Island.
  • Sighting: 500 feet wide by 1000 feet long area of emulsion located 1.2 miles S of East Timbalier Island.
  • Sighting: 40 feet diameter patch of oil located 1.3 miles N of East Timbalier Island.
  • Sighting: Long wide area of oil sheen located 1.1 miles NW of East Timbalier Island.
  • Sighting: 50 Feet by 100 feet area of emulsion located .5 miles SW of East Timbalier Island.
  • Sighting: 40 feet by 500 feet area of emulsion located .5 miles SW of East Timbalier Island.
  • Sighting: 20 feet by 900 feet area of emulsion located 1.3 miles E of Calumet Island.
  • Sighting: Multiple streamers of red oil 1.3 miles E of Calumet Island.
  • Sighting: Tar balls located in an unnamed bay 1.1 miles SE of Pointe Fourchon
  • Sighting: Tar balls impacting the W shore of Bayou Lafourche .33 miles W of Port Fourchon.

Plaquemines:

  • Sighting: 2 patches of tar bars fist sized 50 yards by 100 yards wide approximately 1 mile apart located 4.7 miles SE of Bastian Pass.
    Sighting: Tar balls located 1.5 miles W of Port Eads.
  • Sighting: 5000 feet long oil streamers located 4 miles E of Harris Island.
  • Sighting: 10 feet by 60 feet area of oil impacting the marsh located .2 miles E of Mississippi Bayou.
  • Sighting: Emulsified oil with sheen located 6.1 miles SE of Burrwood Bayou.
  • Sighting: Emulsified oil 83 feet in diameter located 3.3 miles S of Burrwood Bayou.
  • Sighting: Emulsified oil 375 feet wide by 600 feet long located 7 miles W of Stake Island.
  • Sighting: Heavy oil located 9 miles W of Pass Tante Phine.
  • Sighting: Dispersed oil located 5.3 miles SW of Bayou Trouve.
  • Sighting: 100 feet wide area of heavy oil impacting the marsh 3.5 miles NE of Pelican Island.
  • Sighting: 30 yards by 30 yard area of oil located 1.5 miles SW of Chaland Pass.
  • Sighting: 5 mile long area of oil located in Bay Chaland 1.8 miles SW of Chaland Pass.
  • Sighting: Large oil patch impacting the NE marsh in Bay Long 1.1 miles NW of Bayou la Mer.
  • Sighting: Patches of weathered oil 10 to 15 feet long located .5 miles W of Bay Cheniere.

St Bernard:

  • Sighting: New oil 10 feet by 10 feet patch impacting the N coast of Treasure Island 1.3 miles SW of Point Paulina.
  • Sighting: Tar balls with light sheen mile wide located .75 miles SW of Point Eliza.
  • Sighting: Patchy oil located 2.3 miles SW of Hewes Point.
  • Sighting: Oil located 1.2 miles from coast, between Hewes Point and Redfish Point.
  • Sighting: Tar balls located 3.5 miles E of Comfort Island.

Terrebonne:

  • Sighting: Patch of oil was 100 yards in circumference located in Caillou Bay 3.35 miles NNW of Raccoon Point.
  • Sighting: Light oil sheen 30 feet in diameter located offshore 6.35 miles SSW of Timbalier Island.
  • Sighting: Tar balls, tar patties and emulsified oil located 1.15 miles E of Brush Island.

Sighting: Oil and tar balls found along the bank of Oyster Bayou.
