Report on Oil Sightings throughout Coastal Louisiana

BATON ROUGE (July 31, 2010) - The below is a situational awareness report of oil impacted areas led by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the Louisiana Army National Guard and local governments.

Note: The information in this report is unconfirmed by the state and has been forwarded to the federal incident command post in Houma, which is composed of U.S. Coast Guard and BP officials, for their action. This report consists of newly impacted areas, and does not serve as a comprehensive listing of impacted areas.

Sightings Report July 31, 2010

St Bernard:

  • Sighting: Oil sheen 1 mile long by mile wide located .63 miles WSW of Deadman Island.
  • Sighting: Oil impacting shoreline of Turtle Pen Isle located in Drum Bay.
  • Sighting: Oil sheen located in Eloi Bay 3 miles NW of Deadman Island
  • Sighting: Oil located in N Drum Bay 1.65 miles W of Turtle Pen Isle

Plaquemines:

  • Sighting: Oil located in Scofield Bayou .78 miles E of Pelican Island.
  • Sighting: Oil sheen with tar balls located in N Barataria Bay .75 miles S of Saint Marys Point.
  • Sighting: Oil sheen located in Bay Jimmy 3.37 miles ENE of Saint Marys Point.
  • Sighting: Oil located offshore 13.20 miles SSW of Pelican Island.
  • Sighting: Oil impacting beach located 1 mile E of Chaland Pass.
  • Sighting: Oil sheen with tar balls located in Bay Jimmy 1.77 miles ESE of Saint Marys Point.
  • Sighting: Oil Sheen located in N Barataria Bay 1 mile SE of Saint Marys Point.
  • Sighting: 4 mile streamer of emulsified substance located 8.2 miles S of Grand Terre Islands.
  • Sighting: mile streamer of oil sheen located 9 miles SW of Pass Tante Phine.
  • Sighting: 1 mile wide by 1 mile long streamer of submerged substance located 8.3 miles W of Pass La Graisse.
  • Sighting: 1 mile streamer of emulsified substance with sheen located 5.4 miles SE of West Jetty.
  • Sighting: Patch of submerged emulsified substance sighted 7.2 miles SE of Thomasin Lumps.

Jefferson:

  • Sighting: Oil located offshore 8.35 miles SSE of Elmers Island.
  • Sighting: Oil located in Barataria Bay .22 miles SE of Pelican Point.
  • Sighting: Oil located in Barataria Bay .63 miles ESE of Manilla.
  • Sighting: Oil sheen located .15 miles NE of Manilla.
  • Sighting: Oil sheen located 1.4 miles NE of Grand Isle.
  • Sighting: Streamers of recoverable oil located 8.3 miles SE of Elmers Island.

Lafourche:

  • Sighting: Oil located in Timbalier Bay just off the N end of the Phil Brice Islands.
  • Sighting: Tar Balls located in Pelican Pass .7 miles E of the Phil Brice Islands.
  • Sighting: 8 feet long by 4 feet wide patch of oil located .4 miles S of Fricot Bayou.
  • Sighting: Area of oil with trash in it located 2.1 miles E of Philo Brice Islands.
  • Sighting: Oil patch 7 feet in diameter located miles S of Philo Brice Islands.
  • Sighting: Oil impacting the shore Philo Brice Islands
    Sighting: 100 yard by 30 yard area of emulsified oil impacting the shore on Northwest Island.

Terrebonne:

  • Sighting: Scattered oil sheen streamers with emulsion and tar balls located offshore 2.35 miles S of Timbalier Island.
  • Sighting: 1 mile streamer of emulsified substance located 1.4 miles N of Timbalier Island.
  • Sighting: 2 Mile convergence of emulsified substance located .7 miles N of Timbalier Island.
  • Sighting: mile patch of oil sheen located 1.6 miles N of Caillou Island.
  • Sighting: Tar patties located 7.7 miles S of East Timbalier Island.


Cameron:

  • Sighting: Streamer of red recoverable oil located offshore 15.38 miles SSW of Crab Lake.
