Office of Coastal Protection and Restoration Issues Contract for Grand Isle Shoreline Protection
Office of Coastal Protection and Restoration News Update
BATON ROUGE, La. (September 9, 2008) -
The Office of Coastal Protection and Restoration (OCPR) began directing resources to Grand Isle Tuesday, Sept. 9 to build additional shoreline protection in areas damaged by Hurricane Gustav.
OCPR has issued a contract to place rock protection on the east end of Grand Isle near Barataria Pass. The rock will protect the northeast corner of the island and tie into the rock jetty that begins at the Grand Isle State Park on the Gulf of Mexico and stretches around the east side of the island to Bayou Rigaud.
The jetty will then connect to an existing rock structure on the northeast side of the U.S. Coast Guard Station in order to further protect the east end of the island from tide movement and wave action.
The rock structure is being constructed to a four-foot elevation and being placed on top of geo-textile fabric for stability. The new jetty will have a crown width of fiv! e feet.
Approximately 12,000 tons of rock and 10,000 square yards of geo-textile fabric will be used for the project. For the latest on the recovery from Hurricane Gustav, you can visit emergency.louisiana.gov or call the state's emergency hotline at 1-866-288-2484 to listen to a recorded message with the most up-to-date information.
