PRESS RELEASE

HURRICANE GUSTAV NEWS
FEMA Adds Six Louisiana Parishes for Individual Assistance
BATON ROUGE, La. (September 11, 2008) - Six additional parishes – Catahoula, Franklin, Grant, LaSalle, St. Helena and Washington – have been made eligible for federal disaster assistance, the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced Wednesday.

Hurricane Gustav victims in those parishes are now eligible for assistance to individuals and households. The aid may come in the form of both grants and loans to repair or replace damaged property, as well as other programs. The aid program will not cover all losses, but is designed to help people return to livable housing.

Residents can register for assistance by going online to www.fema.gov, or by calling FEMA at 800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 800-462-7585. Either online or by phone, the system is open 24 hours a day seven days a week until further notice.

Those who register are urged to have pen and paper ready to take down their case number. The toll-free call takes about 20 minutes, and can be taken in any language.

The call goes more quickly if residents have the following:

  • Social Security number (including spouse’s)
  • Address and zip code of the damaged property
  • Directions to the damaged home or property
  • Telephone numbers where FEMA can reach applicant
  • Private insurance policy, if any
  • Bank information to enable direct deposit
  •   Current mailing address

The addition of the six brings the total number of Louisiana parishes eligible for federal disaster assistance to individuals and households to 42.

For the latest information on the recovery from Hurricane Gustav, visit www.emergency.louisiana.gov or call the state's emergency hotline at 1-866-288-2484 to listen to a recorded message with the most up-to-date information.

FEMA coordinates the federal government’s role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.

Since 1990, GOHSEP has managed over 28 federal disaster declarations and has coordinated several hundred state disaster declarations authorized under the Governor's signature. Over the years, the mission has evolved to include the spectrum of natural, man-made disasters and as of 2003; the duties and responsibilities for supporting Louisiana's Homeland Security needs.
