Upcoming Flood Waters

Release 5

ASSUMPTION PARISH (May 17, 2011) - Assumption Parish Planning Officials are anticipating a rise of 2 ½ feet of water from the water levels of Tuesday, May 10, 2011.

The parish is continuing to bring sand and sandbags to the following areas:

Lee Drive (at the old Blanchard's store) Belle River Ball Park
Gumbo Street Hwy. 996 & Hwy. 1001 (Church)
Hwy. 70 & N Curtis St. Hey. 403 & Hwy. 1004
Rue de Kajun Street Hwy. 402 Turnaround (Hollywood's)
North Bay Road Hwy. 401 near Fire Station
South Bay Road Hwy. 401 & Bayou Crab Road
Shell Beach Road (near old Chilly's site) Hwy. 1012 (Boat Launch Parking Lot)
Behind Halter Marine Building Bayou L'Ourse Ball Park
End of North Belle River Road  

With the assistance of the National Guard and local agencies, flood tubes have been placed in areas of concern in the parish, as well.

Parish Officials are continuously monitoring this situation closely. Community meetings were held in the communities of Pierre Part and Bayou L'Ourse in order to address citizen's concerns regarding the flood. Necessary precautions and preparations should be taken by all, especially those residents that reside in low lying areas. Anyone that evacuates or leaves their home is asked to turn off all utilities (water, gas, and electricity) at the main line. Please note that there are currently no evacuations in place for Assumption Parish; however, the Assumption Parish Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness is fully prepared to open shelters in the event of evacuations.

A "No Wake Zone" has been put into effect for all bodies throughout Assumption Parish that are within the immediate vicinity of a camp, dwelling, and/or structure. The Sheriff's Office and Wildlife and Fisheries will be patrolling the area and strictly enforcing the "No Wake Zone".

No changes have been made by the Assumption Parish School Board regarding the last day of school. It still remains to be May 25, 2011. Graduation will also continue as planned.
