ST. LANDRY PARISH (May 9, 2011) - In preparation of the upcoming floods, St. Landry Parish Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is issuing a mandatory evacuation of all livestock on the levee and surrounding areas. This includes the towns of Krotz Springs, Melville and Port Barre. All livestock owners are urged to immediately execute a plan to move all livestock to higher grounds out of the flood zones as soon as possible.

A voluntary evacuation is also being issued to residents in the Krotz Springs, Melville and Three Mille Lake areas. Residents are asked to prepare their homes by elevating personal items, relocating inside and outside belongings and by gathering the necessary paperwork to include birth certificates, social security cards, driver's licenses, insurance and medical information as well as financial records. We are asking residents to collect pets and contact family members, outside of the flood zones, for shelter as flooding has the potential of lasting a couple of weeks. Beginning tomorrow, May 10th, sandbags will be available for pick up between the hours of 9am and 5pm in Krotz Springs under the bridge located at Hwy 190. Please know St. Landry Parish Government, St. Landry Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Department, St. Landry Parish 911 and The US Army National Guard are working closely with local town officials and law enforcement agencies to ensure the residents of St. Landry Parish are informed, prepared and provided with the necessary resources needed to fight against the spring flood of 2011.
