PRESS RELEASE

City of Morgan City

ST. MARY PARISH (May 26, 2011) -

  • The Atchafalaya River is at 10.17 feet (up .31 ft in last 24 hours) as of 11:00 AM with Lake Palourde at 3.93 (up .01 ft in last 24 hours)
  • Continuing 24 hour monitoring of the back water levee system
  • Continuing to house and feed 260 Louisiana National Guardsmen and fueling necessary equipment monitoring the levee, with an additional 20 search and rescue standing by
  • Working with Louisiana National Guard staging additional sandbags and bulk bags in strategic locations for emergency use if necessary
  • The St. Mary Parish Levee District maintains the barge across the Bayou Chene south of Amelia. Monitors continue to report 18" - 24" lower level on protected side
  • Corp of Engineers inspects all floodgates daily advising the City of any necessary maintenance
  • No further gate closures scheduled AT THIS TIME
  • The crest prediction is nearing 11' early Monday morning on May 30 as revised by the National Weather Service
  • Sand and bags for the residential population are available under the elevated portion of Highway 90 at David Drive from 8:00AM to 7:00 PM daily. Limited to 25 bags per household, please
  • Although no evacuation of the community appears to be necessary at this time, just as when we are anticipating a hurricane, you should plan ahead for the possibility
  • PLEASE RESPECT SIGNAGE ON SEAWALL PLACED THERE FOR YOUR PROTECTION. NO SPECTATORS ARE ALLOWED ON THE UNPROTECTED SIDE. VIOLATORS WILL BE ARRESTED
  • DO NOT WALK, DRIVE OR PARK ON THE LEVEES. IT IS THE LAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • MCPD continues to monitor several surveillance cameras on the seawall facing the unprotected side properties
  • The Coast Guard continues boat patrols in the River
